The Board of Directors, executive officers, and managers of Sahaviriya Steel Industries Public Company Limited or SSI and other companies of Sahaviriya Group led by Mr. Wit Viriyaprapaikit, Chief Executive Officer of Sahaviriya Group, and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of SSI, jointly bade the courtesy farewell to Dr. Maruey Phadoongsidhi on the completion term of Chairman of SSI.

Dr. Maruey Phadoongsidhi has joined Sahaviriya Group after he retired from the position of Managing Director of the Stock Exchange of Thailand since 1993 until April 2011. Throughout 19-year period, Dr. Maruey has greatly contributed benefactions to SSI and Sahaviriya Group. He provided many visionary directions and put his best efforts on leading Sahaviriya Group. He also played important roles to lead the group to overcome many economic crisis, such as Baht depreciation crisis in 1997 and recent sub-prime crisis of the United States of America. Thanks to his brilliant steering, the business of the Group becomes strong today and can successfully expand its business to upstream steel industry, Sahaviriya Steel Teeside in UK.

Besides, Dr. Maruey also has advocated importance on Bangsaphan communities where Sahaviriya Group operates its business by formulating policies based on community and social responsibilities and conducting business by adhering to good corporate governance. He initiated many projects by taking into considerably sustainable development means which emphasizing on promotion and development of the social deprived opportunity people and community activities with participation from all sectors, i.e. the company, officers, local people and related agencies. Those activities include education development, promotion & conservation of environment, career development, health & hygienic promotion and religions & cultural preservation. He demonstrated strong intention to be a good citizen and has been trusted by Bangsaphan people and the stakeholders for his aims to strengthen the community and society, so they can lead a happy way of life.

ดร.มารวย ผดุงสิทธิ์ เข้าร่วมงานกับเครือสหวิริยา หลังจากพ้นวาระในตำแหน่งกรรมการผู้จัดการตลาดหลักทรัพย์แห่งประเทศไทยเมื่อปี 2536 จนกระทั่งเดือนเมษายน 2554 ตลอดระยะเวลา 19 ปีที่ผ่านมา ท่านดร.มารวย ผดุงสิทธิ์ ได้สร้างคุณูปการหลายประการให้กับเครือสหวิริยา โดยร่วมให้ทิศทางในการบริหารและมุ่งมั่นปฏิบัติงานอย่างทุ่มเทให้บริษัทในเครือสหวิริยา จนสามารถนำพาบริษัทผ่านพ้นวิกฤติทางเศรษฐกิจ ทั้งวิกฤติค่าเงินบาทเมื่อปี 2540 หรือวิกฤติสินเชื่อด้อยคุณภาพของประเทสสหรัฐอเมริกา จนทำให้กิจการกลับมาแข็งแกร่ง และทำให้เอสเอสไอสามารถขยายการลงทุนไปยังอุตสาหกรรมเหล็กต้นน้ำ คือ โรงถลุงเหล็กและผลิตเหล็กกล้าครบวงจร สหวิริยาสตีล ทีไซด์ ในประเทศอังกฤษได้เป็นผลสำเร็จ

นอกจากนี้ ดร.มารวยยังได้ให้ความสำคัญต่อชุมชนในพื้นที่ที่เครือสหวิริยาได้เข้าไปประกอบกิจการ ได้แก่ พื้นที่อำเภอบางสะพาน จังหวัดประจวบคีรีขันธ์ โดยได้กำหนดนโยบายการดำเนินกิจกรรมความรับผิดชอบต่อชุมชนและสังคม การดำเนินธุรกิจให้ประสบความสำเร็จโดยยึดหลักธรรมาภิบาลที่ดี และได้ริเริ่มโครงการใหม่ๆ ตามแนวทางแห่งการพัฒนาสู่ความยั่งยืน ที่มุ่งเน้นการส่งเสริมและพัฒนาสำหรับผู้ด้อยโอกาสในสังคม และกิจกรรมชุมชนแบบมีส่วนร่วมจากทุกภาคส่วน ทั้งบริษัท พนักงาน ประชาชนในชุมชน และหน่วยงานที่เกี่ยวข้องผ่านรูปแบบกิจกรรมต่างๆ ในด้านการพัฒนาการศึกษา การส่งเสริมดูแลและรักษาสิ่งแวดล้อม การพัฒนาอาชีพ การส่งเสริมสุขภาพและอนามัยที่ดี การร่วมดูแลทำนุบำรุงศาสนาและวัฒนธรรม ซึ่งแสดงให้เห็นถึงเจตจำนงค์อันแน่วแน่ของการเป็นพลเมืองที่ดีและได้รับความไว้วางใจจากชาวบางสะพานและผู้มีส่วนได้เสีย ด้วยมุ่งหวังที่จะสร้างความแข็งแกร่งให้กับชุมชนและสังคมในการดำเนินชีวิตได้อย่างมีความสุข
